Customized Nutrition
How do I know what supplements I need? My answer to this question may surprise you. The answer is: I have no idea what supplements you need. The fact is, every individual’s biochemistry is different and every individual need is different based on their body’s particular circumstances. This is why in my clinic we test not guess.
Today’s technology is so advanced in this area that we are able to bring the type of testing that once only professional athletes, celebrities and the wealthy were able to afford and utilize and offer it to the rest of us at an affordable rate.
This type of testing has advanced leaps and bounds in the last five years. Not only in a way to make it more affordable to more people, but also in being able to pinpoint specific nutritional deficiencies. The Comprehensive Metabolic Profile (CMP) was once used to aid the very sick in recovering from illness and now we use it to accurately assess nutritional needs…For example, knowing someone’s cellular energy needs is critical to knowing if their engine (cell mitochondria) is running properly. B vitamins have a major impact in this area. All body processes depend on this key activity. Inadequate energy production, at the cellular level, can affect any aspect of your body’s functions and can have a detrimental impact on a wide range of health conditions.
Another category of assessment is neural function. This category relates to neurotransmitters – the chemicals your nerve system uses to function and communicate with your body. Abnormalities in this area can relate to symptoms of mental, emotional and behavioral problems.
No supplement or nutritional program would be worthwhile without measuring a person’s ability to detoxify the modern-day onslaught of toxicity. Many people have symptoms such as brain fog, headaches, anxiety, insomnia, digestive issues etc, because of their inability to detoxify chemicals. Certain amino acid markers can tell the practitioner if your excretory pathways are not functioning properly which will eventually lead to the variety of diseases of the new millennium.
We can utilize the best testing and give the best supplements on the market and even the correct ones based on a body’s individual biochemistry and yet if someone cannot absorb the nutrition from their supplements because of an intestinal imbalance it is worthless – regardless of cost or accuracy. The test we use enables us to measure intestinal microbial markers so that if there is an imbalance it can be corrected to maximize a person’s nutrition. Like antioxidants, fish oils (omega 3 and 6 fatty acids) are the latest craze. Many people, including my own patients, are running out and buying fish oils and consuming them in volumes. What we frequently find on our CMP are individuals who are in a state of omega 3 dominance. This leads to anxiety, hyperactivity, nervousness, restless sleep, and inflammation – the very thing most people are taking the product to prevent. The ratio of fatty acids has been proven to be more important than a general decrease in fatty acid levels.
As you can see, the Comprehensive Metabolic Profile (CMP) is complete in its assessment and is what I feel is the best in what science has to offer today in this type of testing and we are utilizing the laboratory that has literally written the book on this subject.
